El Acrotholus audeti ,vivió hace 85 millones de años.
Tenía el tamaño de un perro, pesaba unos 40 kilos, medía 1,80 centímetros desde la punta de la cola hasta su hocico, pero lo que más llamaba la atención de su anatomía era su cráneo monumental,como si llevara puesto un casco.
Acrotholus significa «alta cúpula», en referencia a su cráneo en forma de cúpula, compuesto por un hueso sólido de más de 10 cm de espesor. Grueso y abombado por encima de sus ojos, el cráneo servía para exhibirse ante otros miembros de su especie, pero también pudo haber sido utilizado como una potente arma para pelearse a cabezazos.
Los paleontólogos implicados en este descubrimiento creen que todavía hay muchas pequeñas especies como esta que esperan a ser descubiertas. Los fósiles del Acrotholus serán puestos al público en el Museo Real de Ontario a partir de este mes de mayo.
El estudio ha sido publicado hoy en la revista Nature Communications.
